For a while now, I've been wondering if there's room for writers in this world where almost everything is now being consumed visually.
Close friends will testify that I talk too much and make them laugh. Most of them have even suggested that I create a Youtube channel just to share stories.
I've tried! Believe me! But I cannot.
For one thing, I hate talking in front of a camera. I don't know whether it has to do with my introverted nature or just the crippling anxiety of stage performance. But, one of two things happen whenever I'm in front of a camera. It's either my words get stuck in a tangled mess or I come off as a scripted robot.
Is this something to work on? Yes.
Do I want to torture myself in the name of creating content? No.
Besides, it's just too much work. There's the planning, set-up, filming and editing that goes into the whole process. I know what I'm talking about. I make guitar covers every now and then. I also make fanvids for my favorite shows and lyric videos. In fact, my 'This is Us' fanvid has over 15,000 views. on YouTube. Does this mean I'm a YouTube star?
Filming a video is just a nightmare for me. Do you know how many times it takes to record something free of mistakes? Sure, you can leave bloopers and all but if you have a vision, you want it to be at least free from as many mistakes as possible to share your message. Ask an actor. They'll tell you.
Bottom line is this, I don't like talking in videos. But if you're so interested in watching a video of me talking, here's your chance.
One more thing: YouTube is just overcrowded. Everybody is shouting there and the ads are a pain in my neck. Yes, that doesn't directly affect my ability to create content but I just wanted to put it out there - I'm sick of YouTube ads.
All in all, writing is my strength. I've chosen to hone this craft and reach people who still value reading.
I'm certain that a time will come where real truths will be searched for only in written words because as it is today, anybody can easily share unfiltered opinions and lead people astray.
Written content is going nowhere and only a few will find the diamonds in the rough.
